What it is
A merchant cash advance is a lump sum repaid as a fixed percentage of your daily card takings. Trade slows and the payment shrinks with it, so the term stretches rather than the repayment biting. It suits hospitality, retail and salons where income arrives card by card and a fixed monthly figure would be awkward.
Be clear on the cost. It is priced as a factor rate, not an interest rate. Borrow £50,000 at 1.3 and you repay £65,000, taken as an agreed slice of your daily card takings. Quiet month, smaller payment, longer term. It is more expensive than a term loan, and if your bank conduct is strong and you can wait a week, we will tell you to take the loan instead.
Who it suits
- You take most of your income by card and want repayments that flex with trade.
- You need funds in days, not weeks, for stock or a short opportunity.
- You have been declined for a term loan on paper but the till tells a better story.
- You accept a higher cost in exchange for speed and repayment that follows takings.
