What it is
Asset finance spreads the cost of equipment over its working life instead of paying for it in one hit. Hire purchase ends in ownership. A finance lease rents the asset over a primary term. An operating lease covers use for a set period and hands it back.
The route most owners miss is sale and hire purchase back. The lender buys an asset you already own outright and you repay over an agreed term while carrying on using it, which releases cash locked in plant or vehicles. Soft assets such as IT and fit-out are funded differently from hard assets such as machinery, and the capital allowances are worth a conversation with your accountant before you commit.
Who it suits
- You need plant, vehicles or machinery without a lump sum leaving the account.
- You own equipment outright and want to release the cash tied up in it.
- You are buying used or auction equipment a high street lender will not touch.
- You want to own the asset at the end, so hire purchase suits.
